Folks sometimes use an alias in certain settings rather than their "real" legal name.
This seems more common in the entertainment industry where an alias may be referred to as a professional, stage, screen, ring, or pen name.
Professionals adopting aliases commonly include actors, authors, comedians, magicians, models, musicians, rappers, singers, wrestlers, and more. Reasons for aliasing celebrity names vary including:
- Marketing. Fictitious names may sound relevant and appealing to the indentended audience. Performers are selling themselves. Attractive packaging with a nice label help. Some might be flashy or even outrageous to get attention.
- Simplicity. You can't help the name chosen by your parents. So if you're a performer with a long, difficult to pronounce or remember name, you may elect something more simple, catchy, and easy to remember.
- Duplication. Names may be chosen so-as to not infringe on those of others currently in use or used in the past by famous people.
- Anonymity. Some performers wish to maintain a certain separation from their professional and personal lives.
Many of these are relevant to the selection of a baby's name especially length, difficulty, and pronounciation. Read our baby naming advice for more guidance in this regard.
